Letter from our Director
July 2011
Greetings,
As I write this, North Carolina legislators have finally started representing a segment of the population that they have traditionally ignored, the unborn.
On April 29, North Carolina joined 35 other states in recognizing there are two victims when a pregnant woman is injured or killed as a result of violence, when Governor Perdue signed into law The Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Praise God!
On June 12, Governor Perdue became the first governor in North Carolina history to veto a state budget. On June 15, lawmakers voted to override the governor’s veto. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, was defunded in this budget. North Carolina operates on a biennium budget schedule, which means that effective July 1, the taxpayers of North Carolina will not be paying for abortions for at least two years. Praise God!
H854, The Woman’s Right to Know Act easily passed the House and the Senate, but was promptly vetoed by our governor. This bill simply ensures that women are given accurate information regarding fetal development (including ultrasound imaging) and the risks associated with abortion, and ensure them a minimum of 24 hours to digest this information. These same provisions have been passed into law in 24 other states. I spoke with an aide in the House speaker’s office this week and he assured me they were trying to secure enough votes to override the governor’s veto. Since then the House and the Senate voted to override the governor’s veto. Praise God! Please contact House Speaker, Rep. Thom Tillis @ 910-733-3457 or Thom.Tillis@ncleg.net to thank and encourage him for his efforts to protect the lives of North Carolina’s most vulnerable citizens.
I would like to thank everyone who works to make Life Chain happen. Carolina Christian Radio, K-Love and Wilmington Catholic Radio are generous with airtime. Freedom Baptist Church, Scotts Hill Baptist Church and Austin Corp. allow us to use their facilities. Thanks to all the pastors and contact persons who coordinate within each church that participates in Life Chain. Thanks to those of you who help me make the calls, do the printing, get the letters out, sort and count posters and work at the tent. A very special thanks to those who provide vehicles. If Life Chain is a success, it is because of your dedication and hard work. Thank you.
We must continue to stand and speak for those who are unable to do so for themselves. Please be in much prayer for this year’s Life Chain.
